Soli Vargas Recruiting

When we think of emerging technology jobs we think of Internet of Things specialists, machine learning / AI engineers or blockchain developers or research analysts.

In this article we are going to understand the proportion of Emerging Tech jobs versus the total market for September, take a look at how AI is dominating the sector at the moment and then look at the roles available based on our own small study of the market here at Soli Vargas Recruiting.

EMERGING TECH JOBS 30% OF TOTAL TECH JOB POSTINGS

The recent CompTIA Tech Jobs Report October 2022 showed that whilst new job postings had started to slow, in September there were 300,000 tech job postings. Of those job postings 30% were from the “EmTech” sector.

But where exactly would these jobs come from?

Crypto market cap has fallen by 71% since the highs in November 2021 with the “crypto winter” being declared by many market participants.

This bloodbath in crypto with many projects without proper funding or traction folding, as well as the industry darling Coinbase cutting back its workforce earlier this year in June 2022.

It is not likely to be from the crypto industry, despite the longer term growth expectations of the true crypto believers.

Recent data from EMSI-Burning Glass Technologies Insights showed that of the total 104,934 job postings from Emerging Technology companies 91,624 referenced AI job roles and skills citations.

If you are somebody who is looking to get into the Emerging Tech sector then the best place right now, with the most opportunity, is the AI and Machine Learning space.

Working in fast growth, startup environments can be very exhilarating. I have first hand experience from my time working at TubeMogul which was acquired by Adobe four years after I joined in 2013. It was an incredible experience.

Generally with companies who are in a new emerging sector, there can be less competition and employers are more likely to hire based on potential. At the same time the earlier you get in the easier it is to progress up the career ladder, there is greater exposure to high quality networking opportunities and there is a better chance of having a higher feeling of job satisfaction.

EMPLOYERS ARE OPEN TO REMOTE WORKING

In our study of the recruitment needs of the five AI businesses mentioned above there was an overwhelming openness for new hires to work in a remote capacity. 75% of the open roles we found specified that they were allowed to work remotely.  Indeed, Arize AI and Discord were open to workers being totally remote for all the positions they had open.

Indeed this is reflected in the wider market data we saw from jobs numbers reported by CompTIA Tech Jobs Report October 2022.  As a % of the total tech jobs posted (300,000 for September) this is approximately 25%, less that our survey, but still significant and in line with previous WFT trends we have discussed.
